<p>Building your own DIY floating picture frame is a pretty dang easy project. If you&#8217;re new to woodworking, it&#8217;s a great starter project. If you have some experience in the shop, it&#8217;s a super quick/fun build to take on.</p>

<p>In this post, I&#8217;ll walk you through how to build your own DIY floating picture frame in a few easy-to-follow steps as well as include a few additional tips in case you wish to paint your frame a custom color.</p>

<p>Let&#8217;s dive in!</p>

<p class="has-background has-small-font-size" style="background-color:#ececec"><em>Some of our posts contain affiliate links. We often share links to the tools &amp; products used in our home improvement projects and if you purchase one of these items using our link, we may earn a small commission (at no additional cost to you).</em></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="materials">Materials</h2>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li><em><a href="https://www.homedepot.com/p/1-in-x-2-in-x-8-ft-Furring-Strip-Board-160954/100009348" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">1&#8243; x 2&#8243;</a></em> (an 8&#8242; piece worked for my 18&#8243; x 24&#8243; canvas)</li><li><a href="https://www.homedepot.com/p/Weaber-1-4-in-x-2-in-x-4-ft-S4S-Poplar-Board-27402/207058967" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">1/4&#8243;</a> (1-2&#8242; will work)</li><li><a href="https://amzn.to/3fPnlBK" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Mitre Saw</a> or <a href="https://amzn.to/3GRC8HX" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Mitre Box</a></li><li><a href="https://amzn.to/3fOVRwk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Nail Gun</a></li><li><em><a href="https://amzn.to/3tPZqdB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Wood Filler</a></em></li><li><a href="https://amzn.to/3fM2dfE" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Wood Clamp</a></li></ul>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="step-1-measure-your-art">Step 1: Measure Your Art</h2>

<p>Measure the length and width of your art. Our painting is roughly 24&#8243; wide by 18&#8243; tall. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1000" height="621" src="https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-.jpg" alt="Close-up showing a measurement being taken of a painted canvas for a DIY project on how to build your own floating picture frame." class="wp-image-4522" srcset="https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-.jpg 1000w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame--300x186.jpg 300w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame--768x477.jpg 768w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame--570x354.jpg 570w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame--800x497.jpg 800w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure>

<p>Since this is a floating frame, we&#8217;ll want roughly a 1/8 inch gap between our frame and the painting. </p>

<p>Account for the 1/8&#8243; gap on both sides of the painting.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img decoding="async" width="940" height="788" src="https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Picture-Frame-Canvas-Measurements.png" alt="Image of a painted canvas and the proper measures needed to be made for the length and width to build a floating picture frame with a 1/8&quot; gap on all sides." class="wp-image-4553" srcset="https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Picture-Frame-Canvas-Measurements.png 940w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Picture-Frame-Canvas-Measurements-300x251.png 300w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Picture-Frame-Canvas-Measurements-768x644.png 768w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Picture-Frame-Canvas-Measurements-570x478.png 570w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Picture-Frame-Canvas-Measurements-800x671.png 800w" sizes="(max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px" /></figure>

<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Measurements &amp; Math</span></p>

<p>24&#8243; + 1/8 + 1/8 = <strong>24 1/4&#8243;</strong></p>

<p><meta charset="utf-8">24&#8243; + 1/8 + 1/8 = <strong>24 1/4&#8243;</strong></p>

<p>18&#8243; + 1/8 + 1/8 = <strong>18 1/4&#8243;</strong></p>

<p><meta charset="utf-8"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">18&#8243; + 1/8 + 1/8 = <strong>18 1/4&#8243;</strong></span></p>

<p><strong>TOTAL LENGTH NEEDED FOR OUR PAINTING: 85&#8243;</strong> or <strong>7.08&#8242;</strong></p>

<p>For our project, we used what is commonly known as a <a href="https://www.homedepot.com/p/1-in-x-2-in-x-8-ft-Furring-Strip-Board-160954/100009348" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">1&#8243; x 2&#8243; furring strip</a>. Similar to the 2&#215;4, those are not the actual measurements. This piece of wood actually measures .75&#8243; x 1.5&#8243;.</p>

<p>With our measurements above being just over 7&#8242;, we purchased 8&#8242; of material. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="step-2-cut-your-wood">Step 2: Cut Your Wood</h2>

<p>A good miter saw is the preferred tool to make the most accurate 45-degree crosscuts. However, if you don&#8217;t have access to a miter saw and are looking for an inexpensive alternative you can also use a <a href="https://amzn.to/3GRC8HX" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">miter box</a>. </p>

<p>If you are in the market for a miter saw, check out<a href="https://amzn.to/3fPnlBK" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow"> Bosch&#8217;s patented axial glide miter saw</a>. I just picked up the 12&#8243; version last year and the hinged arm (official name &#8211; axial glide) allows you to set the saw again the wall in your shop. This technology is a game-changer as most other miter saws need 12-18&#8243; of clearance from the wall!</p>

<p>Needless to say, this monster is the envy of a few woodworkers in my family. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://amzn.to/3fPnlBK"><img decoding="async" width="1000" height="750" src="https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Wainscoting-4323.jpg" alt="Bosch Dual-Bevel Sliding Glide Miter Saw." class="wp-image-4173" srcset="https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Wainscoting-4323.jpg 1000w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Wainscoting-4323-300x225.jpg 300w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Wainscoting-4323-768x576.jpg 768w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Wainscoting-4323-570x428.jpg 570w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Wainscoting-4323-800x600.jpg 800w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></a></figure>

<p>Ok, so let go! Set your miter saw to make a 45-degree crosscut and cut your 1&#8243; x 2&#8243; per the measurements you took above.</p>

<p>After you&#8217;ve cut the four 1&#215;2&#8217;s pieces that will make up your frame, we&#8217;ll want to cut four corner brackets that will allow us to secure your canvas in the frame and create the &#8220;floating&#8221; look. </p>

<p>We used a <a href="https://www.homedepot.com/p/Weaber-1-4-in-x-2-in-x-4-ft-S4S-Poplar-Board-27402/207058967" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">1/4&#8243; thick board</a>. These corner braces will sit flush with the back of the frame.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="879" height="1024" src="https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-0323-879x1024.jpg" alt="Picture of a wooden DIY floating picture frame made from 4 mitered 2x1's with 90-degree braces on the back." class="wp-image-4532" srcset="https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-0323-879x1024.jpg 879w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-0323-258x300.jpg 258w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-0323-768x895.jpg 768w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-0323-570x664.jpg 570w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-0323-800x932.jpg 800w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-0323.jpg 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 879px) 100vw, 879px" /></figure>

<p>There&#8217;s no need to take make an exact measurement on these. Just make try to keep them around 1&#8243; or so out from the corner of the frame. Also, once you cut your first bracket you can use it as a template for your next three. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="727" height="1024" src="https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-3-727x1024.jpg" alt="Close-up showing the braces being cut on a miter saw for the back of a DIY floating picture frame." class="wp-image-4511" srcset="https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-3-727x1024.jpg 727w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-3-213x300.jpg 213w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-3-768x1081.jpg 768w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-3-570x802.jpg 570w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-3-800x1126.jpg 800w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-3.jpg 888w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 727px) 100vw, 727px" /></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="step-3-glue-clamp-nail">Step 3: Glue, Clamp &amp; Nail</h2>

<p>Next dry fit your frame together. How does it fit? Well? If so, you&#8217;re ready to Glue, Clamp, and Nail. </p>

<p>Wood glue is the preferred glue for this type of project. <a href="https://amzn.to/3rCYir7" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Titlebond</a> is our go-to!</p>

<figure class="wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex">
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="873" height="1224" data-id="4514" src="https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-6.jpg" alt="Close-up of a bottle of Titlebond Original Wood Glue being used to glue together a wooden DIY floating picture frame." class="wp-image-4514" srcset="https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-6.jpg 873w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-6-214x300.jpg 214w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-6-730x1024.jpg 730w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-6-768x1077.jpg 768w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-6-570x799.jpg 570w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-6-800x1122.jpg 800w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 873px) 100vw, 873px" /></figure>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="896" height="1336" data-id="4513" src="https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-5.jpg" alt="Image showing the application of Titlebond wood glue to the corner miter of a DIY floating picture frame." class="wp-image-4513" srcset="https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-5.jpg 896w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-5-201x300.jpg 201w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-5-687x1024.jpg 687w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-5-768x1145.jpg 768w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-5-570x850.jpg 570w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-5-800x1193.jpg 800w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 896px) 100vw, 896px" /></figure>
</figure>

<p>Place a small amount of glue in your corners and then secure with a clamp. </p>

<p>I picked up these inexpensive <a href="https://amzn.to/3fM2dfE" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">90-degree clamps</a> not too long back which are awesome for building any sort of box-like structure (picture frame, cabinets, bench, etc.).</p>

<figure class="wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex">
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="1333" data-id="4527" src="https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-0248.jpg" alt="Close-up of a 90-degree wood working clamp being used to build a wooden DIY Floating Picture Frame." class="wp-image-4527" srcset="https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-0248.jpg 1000w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-0248-225x300.jpg 225w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-0248-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-0248-570x760.jpg 570w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-0248-800x1066.jpg 800w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure>

</figure>

<p>Once clamped, permanently secure your frame with a few 1&#8243;-1.25&#8243; nails in each corner. We have this <a href="https://amzn.to/3fOVRwk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Metabo compressor and 18 gauge brad nailer</a> which we use for all our woodworking, crown molding and wainscoting projects (<a href="https://shabbychichouse.com/wainscoting-diy-tutorial/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Check out our recent wainscoting DIY tutorial</a>).</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://amzn.to/3fOVRwk"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="896" height="1570" src="https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-4.jpg" alt="Building a wooden DIY Floating Picture Frame and brad nailing the corners while they are held in place by a 90-degree clamp." class="wp-image-4512" srcset="https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-4.jpg 896w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-4-171x300.jpg 171w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-4-584x1024.jpg 584w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-4-768x1346.jpg 768w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-4-877x1536.jpg 877w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-4-570x999.jpg 570w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-4-800x1402.jpg 800w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 896px) 100vw, 896px" /></a></figure>

<p><strong>CAUTION:</strong> When using a nail gun, make sure to keep your hands clear of the wood that you are nailing. When nailing a thinner piece of wood like this, the nails can occasionally be redirected and unexpectedly pop out the side of the wood. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="step-4-optional-fill-nail-holes">Step 4 (Optional): Fill Nail Holes</h2>

<p>Brad nails are pretty small and would likely go unnoticed. However, if you&#8217;re a perfectionist and don&#8217;t mind spending an extra 2-3 minutes you can fill these holes with a <a href="https://amzn.to/3tPZqdB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">wood filler</a>. </p>

<p>If you don&#8217;t plan on painting your frame make sure to use a <a href="https://amzn.to/3tPZqdB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">natural colored wood filler</a>.</p>

<p>If you plan on painting your frame you could also consider filling the corners/miters to create a frame with a seamless look.</p>

<p>Fill your nail holes/corners and allow 3-4 hours for the wood filler to dry. Once dry, give a light sand. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="step-5-optional-paint-your-frame">Step 5 (Optional): Paint Your Frame</h2>

<p>If you want to go with the natural wood look, you can skip this step. If you want to spice things up, you can add a bit of color or even stain your frame. </p>

<p>With these types of floating frames natural wood, black and white seem to be the most common choices. </p>

<p>For our project, we decided to use Rustoleum&#8217;s Gold Metalic Finish spray paint to match a few other home decor pieces we painted the same color. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="939" height="1024" src="https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-0177-939x1024.jpg" alt="Spray painting a wooden DIY floating picture frame built for a painted canvas with a gold metallic paint." class="wp-image-4539" srcset="https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-0177-939x1024.jpg 939w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-0177-275x300.jpg 275w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-0177-768x837.jpg 768w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-0177-570x621.jpg 570w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-0177-800x872.jpg 800w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-0177.jpg 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 939px) 100vw, 939px" /></figure>

<p>However, if you wanted, you could also paint with some regular ole paint and brush. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="step-6-installing-your-art-into-the-frame">Step 6: Installing Your Art Into the Frame</h2>

<p>To ensure that you have an equal gap between your canvas and frame use cardboard. Your standard cardboard box is about 1/8&#8243; thick and is the perfect size spacer. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="896" height="678" src="https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-13.jpg" alt="DIY Tutorial showing how to use cardboard as spaces to create the perfect size gap and spacing between a painted canvas and home build floating picture frame." class="wp-image-4521" srcset="https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-13.jpg 896w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-13-300x227.jpg 300w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-13-768x581.jpg 768w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-13-570x431.jpg 570w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-13-800x605.jpg 800w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 896px) 100vw, 896px" /></figure>

<p>Once you have your canvas perfect spaced in the frame flip it over secure with a nail or a screw. We drilled pilot holes and used screws, so the canvas could easily be removed from the frame in the future. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="846" height="1024" src="https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-7-846x1024.jpg" alt="Image showing how to secure a canvas painting into a homemade wooden floating picture frame with screws." class="wp-image-4515" srcset="https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-7-846x1024.jpg 846w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-7-248x300.jpg 248w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-7-768x930.jpg 768w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-7-570x690.jpg 570w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-7-800x969.jpg 800w, https://shabbychichouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/DIY-Floating-Picture-Frame-7.jpg 887w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 846px) 100vw, 846px" /></figure>
