Earlier this year, we moved into the newly built ShabbyChicHouse (take the tour) and one of our first priorities was purchasing motorized blinds for our brand new Master Bath. With four windows located directly over our jet tub, we needed motorized blinds to avoid having to step in and out of the tub every time we wanted to open and close the blinds.
Before we came across SelectBlinds we had an in-home consultation with one of the larger national blind companies. They quoted us over $1,100 to install two motorized roman shades to cover the four windows in the photo above.
Shortly after our in-home consultation, we started researching other options and that is when we stumbled across SelectBlinds. We quickly found the exact product we were looking for half the price – and SelectBlinds offered FREE fabric sample swatches to boot. After receiving and assessing their samples in real life, we decided to give SelectBlinds a test try in our Master Bath. It’s now been seven months and we couldn’t be happier with our purchase!
In this post, we’ll walk you through a thorough review of our experience with SelectBlinds.
Below we kick things off with a detailed product rating for SelectBlinds’ Essential Roman shades, followed by a quick overview of their three motorized blind controllers and lastly/more importantly, how their FREE fabric samples work!
Also, this post was originally written independently of SelectBlinds. However, since publishing it we reached out to partner with SelectBlinds and you can now save and additional 5% on top of any of their existing promotions. Just enter the coupon code SCHOU5E at checkout!

Measurements & the FIT Guarantee
Taking your own measurements sounds pretty scary, but it’s actually pretty easy and if you make a mistake, SelectBlinds will even allow you 1 replacement per order and up to 4 replacements per lifetime!
Below are a few measurement tips:
- Pick Inside or Outside Mount – How you measure your windows depends on where you want to mount your blinds inside or outside of your window frame.
- Take measurements for every window frame – while the actual windows are most likely the same size, your window frames will differ in size. Measure each and every window.
- Give your measurements a Name – I called my two measurements “Master Bath – East Wall” and “Master Bath – South Wall.” SelectBlinds will label both of your blinds and this helps you make sure you install the proper blind in the right window frame.
- Measure Twice – After you’ve written down all your measurements, go back and confirm you took your measurements down correctly. In my posts I often mention the old adage – “Measure Twice, Cut Once.” It applies here as well.
SelectBlinds also has a great page dedicated to helping you take your measurements. There you can find a free measurement worksheet, a great video that walks you through how to measure inside vs. outside mount blinds and most importantly more information on their F.I.T. Guarantee.
Motorized Blind Options
SelectBlinds offers three different types of controls for their motorized blinds.
- Remote Control Motorization
- Motorized Wand
- Home Automation
Remote Control Motorization
Most of SelectBlinds’ motorized blinds can be paired with a 1 channel, 6 channel or 16 channel remote. This means – if you purchase the 6 channel remote, you can have up to 6 blinds programed into your remote. If you purchase the 16 channel remote, you can have up to 16 blinds programmed into a single remote.
With a single 16 channel remote you can open a single blind or ALL 16 blinds at once.
All three remotes are the same price and cost only $14.49!
Motorized Wand
Another option is the motorized wand. Essentially, it’s a wand that can be attached on the right or left hand side of your blind and has three buttons allowing you to raise, lower or pause a shade.
The remote wand didn’t appeal to us and we quickly ruled it out as we would still have to step into the tub to open and close our blinds.
To be honest, I’m not sure what the draw might be with the motorized wand. If I’m getting that close, I might as well just do it manually. For me, this option just takes away the WOW! factor out of motorized blinds.
Lastly, you’d need to add a motorized wand to each blind at $53.55. For me, the remote control is the clear winner over the two options.
Home Automation with Alexa, Google or Apple
SelectBlinds’ also offers the NEO Connect Smart WiFi Controller which can be synched with your Apple or Android phone and also be controlled by voice command with Alexa or Google Home devices.
The NEO app can be downloaded on your phone and allows you to open/close a single blind our group of motorized blinds from anywhere.
While controlling my blinds by voice command and phone sounds super cool, the NEO Wifi hub comes to around $240 after discounts. Since this was my first go with SelectBlinds and I only needed motorized blinds for two windows in my bathroom, I decided to go with the $15 remote control option.
With that being said, the area where I am considering the NEO Wifi Hub is in my Great Room where I have 6 large windows that face Southwest. The feature that gets me the most excited is creating Schedules. This allows you to set the blinds to open in the morning at a certain time and close at night at a certain time. Now that motorized blinds with some WOW! factor.
FREE Samples!!!
One of the great things about SelectBlinds is they allow you to order up to 15 free fabric swatches/samples before you place an order.
Start by narrowing down the top 2-3 blinds that have all the features you want. From there you can then pick 4-5 colors/patterns for you samples.
Below is our samples and the product package we were ent before ordering.
With our house being primarily white, we knew we wanted either white or cream blinds. We then placed our samples inside of the window frame next to the wall. This allowed us to see how the fabric looked in the direct light and how it looked next to the painted wall.
Below you can see our sample called “Interstellar” which was a nearly perfect match to our Sherwin-Williams Alabaster paint.
In Conclusion
We couldn’t be happier with our SelectBlinds experience so far. In fact, we’re currently looking at purchasing some less expensive cellular shades for less commonly used rooms, additional motorized shades for our Master/Great Room and even wood shutters a little further on down the road for our garage and possibly sunroom.

How is it that I’ve never heard of Select Blinds? They’re gorgeous and would me perfect for my bathroom. Thank you!
Hi – Are you still happy with the motorized option? I am thinking of ordering them for our bedrooms, but wondering if they will be long lasting to be worth the extra $. Debating cordless lift vs motorized.
Hey Alyssa,
We absolutely love our motorized blinds and thought they were worth the extra money. So far they are holding up great and I’ve only had to recharge them two or three times over 14-15 months.
Also, after giving the roman shades a try we ended up purchasing six more motorized blinds (in a different style) along with the smart controller for our great room. Now we can open/close our blinds via a voice command (Alexa), our phone or even have them on a schedule! I’m planning on doing a new blog post on those blinds soon.
I hope that helps!!!
Hi Mike,
Hope you are doing good. My husband and I found your blogs very useful to us. We went with drees home and took the same flooring as you guys did. Now, we are looking for blinds and thought of revisiting your site and check any blind post have been done. We are eagerly looking forward to your blinds blog.
Thank you
Hey- im trying to find details on the remote controls that selectblinds uses. Do you happen to know if they are RF (radio-frequency) remotes?
Hi,
Your bathroom is absolutely gorgeous and the blinds you chose look lovely. Can you tell me are the blinds you ordered lined or unlined?
Thank you!
